Sauris

Sauris: the village of stone and wood

Sauris is one of Friuli Venezia Giulia's most fascinating villages, not just for its beautiful landscape of woods and verdant fields, but also for its rich and truly unique culture. The conch in which Sauris rises is known as "an island in the mountains", and for a long time it was isolated from the rest of Carnia because it was so difficult to reach from the valley bottom. It is now easy and safe to get to, but its prolonged isolation from the rest of the world has resulted in a community with an almost uncontaminated language and culture, and traditions that have remained unchanged over time leaving an ethnographic heritage that is truly unique. Just as its culture is unique, so is the natural setting that frames the tiny villages of Sauris di Sopra, Sauris di Sotto, Lateis and La Maina. Wide, green fields interspersed with gently rolling hills, slopes coloured with budding spring flowers, snowy peaks that rise high into the deep blue sky and a magical lake of great beauty are just some of the natural wonders the Saurian landscape has in store for you.
